David Downey Sr. in this episode emerges not just as an athlete, but also as an embodiment of African Nova Scotian resilience, and determination. Residents of Main street, a father of ten boys and three girls he is accompanied on this autobiographical journey by his youngest David Downey Jr. Downey Sr. shares a warm story about the sweat and sacrifice of being an athlete and share moments of profound beauty and triumph. The '62 Boys, a championship Baseball team signified by a championship ring that has become an heirloom. It now sits on David Downey Jr.'s finger.
Sr. was also a talented Basketball player as he competed and learned from some of the best in the business. But he carried many accolades as a Boxer, particularly the Canadian Middleweight Championship for 11 years, and he is a Nova Scotia Hall of Famer and a Canadian Hall of Famer! He describes the moment as an emotional experience as he remembers being overwhelmed with emotion as it was a momentous occasion. Sr. did us the curtesy of bringing his championship belts for our live audience to enjoy and take photographs with.
